ASK SCOTT

Really glad you are back, (also Ben Cahoon, Anwar Stuart well every one that is coming back). Thank you for the GREAT season, really REALLY looking forward to the next season. The question I would have is about the Canadian players, how many have to be in a team, and on the field ?, I just love Canadian Football, we don't miss a game all season. And again thank you and congradulations on your award.
Louise, Montreal

Louise,
Thank you so much for the email. It means alot to me to hear from fans. As for your question, there are 42 players dressed for each game. Of those 42, 19 have to be Canadian (but can be more), and of those 19, 7 have to be starters on either offense or defense. We usually start more than the minimum of 7, because we have the talent and because of potential injuries. We typically start 5 offensive lineman, 1 or 2 receivers, a full back, a safety and a cornerback.

Hey Scott, Big fan of you and the Alouettes, Just wondering how often do you hit the weight room in the off season, And what do your work outs consist of? Im a big guy like your self, And would like your imput on how many times a week you should hit the gym, And any pointers you could give me, ect. Thanks, And best of luck too you, The Als, And your family.
Dan, Plaster Rock, New Brunswick

Dan,
Thanks for the email. I have actually just resumed my off season weights program which consists of at least 3 days in gym, but usually 4 or 5. Along with weights, I play hockey, basketball, and footwork/agility training at an indoor soccer field. It is not easy, but if you start and get into a routine (for at least 3 weeks), you will find that it will become second nature. As for tips, remember this. There are three main things in athletic bodies; strength, endurance and flexibility. Work on all three aspects and you will be successful. I will also reference you to my other site, www.oline.ca , which has an article by one of my former coaches on how to work out without a weight room. Thank you again and all the best.

Scott I am originally from Mtl, but now live in Burlington. I get to see you guy's play every time your in Hamilton or Toronto and thanks to Ronnie James, a life long friend, we usually get to go on the field during those games. My question is, I observe you guy's "the O line " when your out there and when your not. when when the Defence is out on the field and you guy's are allways together talking. It seesm pretty intense at times, If I may ask what is it you (the 5 Linemen) are saying?
Kevin, Burlington Ontario

Kevin,
When we get together on the sidelines it is to talk about what the defense is doing and how we are going to adjust. Going into games, we have a general idea of the ways in which they will try to stop us, but the good ones always try new things to stop you. After seeing these things, we will then usually amend plays, change plays or just not run certain plays that won't work.
Football is a game of constant adjustments, and the ones who have a sound fundamental rule base and can adapt quickly will usually win.
Thanks for the great question.

Hey Scott, I play football and i would like to know if you take any products like creatine, protein shakes,...
Christopher, Montreal

Christopher,
Supplements can be very powerful for high end athletes. When my season is over I will be updating my other site, http://www.oline.ca, which will have a mass diet for off season training.
As for myself, out of season I supplement with creatine, protein and glutamine for recovery. In season I use mainly just protein and glutamine.
I must say that I feel the best thing you can do is eat properly and train properly. A good well balanced diet without junk/fast food and training hard with lots of rest will give you the best results.
Thanks for the question.

Last time you wrote me back you were telling me you were excited after meeting Coach. Camp is over and the team looks really good. So I just wanted to wish you the best of luck this season. I hope you all stay healthy and build a strong "family" there on the Mountain.
I wish you good health. I know its a real busy time but if you have a moment and you want to write back and share what was cool about camp this year. I'm kind of curious about what its like to have a coach like Martino who's been around for 30 years...and who if any of the new guys could be long term Als...
Claude, Halifax

Claude,
I have finally found a moment.
Wow, what a year! There is no way anyone could have predicted this year, with the Alouettes or the CFL. This year has definitely exceeded my expectations. Coach Trestman has been great all year, and you can see the results on the field. Coach Martino is another great coach who is one of the nicest men I have ever met. He has lots of great stories to share, and most of them are about Doug Flutie at Boston College.
I hope you and Josh will be cheering us on to the Grey Cup, we will need you support.
Thanks again.

Melisa,
Thanks for the email. Sorry, but I forgot my camera so I don't have any pictures from your school. I had a great time and you have an awesome school. If your teachers or anyone else took pictures, I would post them for everyone to see if they email them to me.
All the best and have a great day.

Who is the qb that you find the easiest to block for and why?Nice to hear u on team990,I never knew u had a website. I'll probably drive u crazy during the season going to forward the site 2 my friends. We are all football nuts.Who do u like 2 win the super bowl?Have a great 2008
Peter, Montreal

Peter,
Thanks for the question, even though it is a very tough one to answer!

I have been fortunate to only have to block for a couple of QB's over 9 seasons in Montreal. I would have to say Anthony Calvillo. He is such a smart quarterback who makes quick precise decisions. In our old offense when he called his own plays (2002-2006), he was no doubt on top of his game. He had complete control of the offense and knew it inside and out. Those were some great years with 4 Grey Cup appearances.

I look forward to all of your questions. I try my best to keep the site up to date as well as responding to emails.
Thanks for your support.
