An Ode to a Legend
Uzooma Okeke. That name will soon be among the greats in the CFL Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. It has been difficult for us, his fellow o-lineman, following the release of Uzo on Saturday. I can only imagine what he and his family are going through.
I had the extreme pleasure of playing with Uzo since 1999. I will never forget his, and the other o-lineman's, generosity and kindness in my first few years. Usually rookies are rarely talked to and made to fend for themselves. They all helped me out. Uzo and I lived in the same apartment building, and he would give me rides to practice from time to time. You have no idea how that feels to not only be a team-mate to people you grew up idolizing, but to actually socialize and call them peers. It is very special indeed.
Uzo will certainly not be forgotten by the people of Montreal. His infectious smile and bellowing laugh are distinct to say the least. They made him. They were him. People tend to like and gravitate to good people, so it is no secret why he is so popular.
A Hall of Fame inductee for sure, and I am proud to say my former team-mate. All the best buddy.
