Another year and another set of rookies trying to be comedians. After practice at the University of Montreal football stadium, the team headed down to Le Cage Aux Sport at the Bell Centre for our annual rookie show. The show usually takes place on the campus at training camp, but since we practiced in the city, the team took care of us downtown.
All in all the night was a hit. There were some very good skits, followed by some pathetic attempts to sing, dance and tell a joke. As usual, the offensive line did not disappoint. Offensive lineman are usually the smartest group on the team (no bias here at all!), so it was no shocker that they did well. The four rookie o-lineman, Darryl Conrad, Ryan Karhut, Sean Brown and Jeff Perrett proceeded to mock myself, Paul Lambert, Bryan Chiu and Dave Mudge accordingly. Even though our pride was hurt a little bit, we all laughed it off in the name of good fun.
The other players mocked on the evening were Avon Cobourne, Alain Kashama, Louis Mackey, Dario Romero and others. Rookie running back Andrew Hamilton came out dressed as Tina Turner singing What's Love Got To Do With It. We were all so shocked at what he was actually doing that it took us almost a minute to boo him off the stage. Surprisingly no one made fun of the coaches since they were not in attendance. Coach Popp even told them that no one was off limits. It was probably smart no one did though, because those types of things have a funny way of getting back to the coaches.
After an evening of fun it was back to the campus and back to the reality of training camp. With no practice yesterday, we had conditioning and weights followed by evening meetings to install the last bits of our offence. We had our last two-a-day practice today, followed by another rookie scrimmage tomorrow night at McGill. Then it is game week prep for Toronto next Thursday. The light at the end of the tunnel is there, but it is still just a flicker.
Happy Father's Day this Sunday to all you dads out there. Thanks for checking in and you can catch up with me again early next week.
