Pain. I don't think there is a better word to describe training camp. From high school, to university to the pros, training camp hurts. After all the weight lifting, running and jumping in the off season, I still hurt. Nothing can simulate football, especially offensive line. You have to hit and be hit to get your body use to the contact.
The first few days of camp have been tough. They always are. We have had a lot of changes this year, new coaches, a new offence, and as always, new players. I think we have responded well, because football is a game of adaptation. Change is the norm. If you don't learn to adapt, you will get left behind. Mark Tressman, a former NFL offensive coordinator and a guest coach at our camp, said last night, "We all love football, but football loves no one."
Heading into our first preseason game this Saturday versus Toronto, we will be easing up the contact at practice. We now have to focus on our assignments and adjustments in order to win the game. This game will be a great chance for rookies to showcase their talents, and for the vets to hone their techniques. Even though it is the preseason, we still would like to set the tone for the season and an attitude for our team. And that starts with a win on Saturday.
